Located just 30 miles north of New York City, Rockland County offers a wealth of attractions and areas of interest for residents and visitors.  Federally designated as a Preserve America Community with more than 1,000 acres of preserved parkland, Rockland is a unique mix of bucolic Hudson River villages and mountain vistas, hiking trails, active farmlands, sophisticated entertainment, fine dining and Broadway-class theater.  There’s always something fun to do in Rockland County.  Stroll through Rockland’s river villages or take in a performance at one of our community theaters, visit one of our historic sites or landmarks, enjoying a sprawling hike in one of many of our scenic parks, play golf on one of our award winning golf courses and sample the cuisine at Rockland’s fine restaurants.

During the past 45 years, the Rockland County Park System has grown from one park of three acres to a network of 23 parks on more than 2,579 rural. pristine acres.  Rockland’s scenic parks are located on the Hudson River and near mountain ridges that preserve its shorelines and skylines as forever green and uncluttered by development.  Many hold great historic value, preserving old Indian trails, and offer mountain and river vistas as well as a variety of recreational opportunities for all.  Meandering nature trails give hikers a chance to spy red-tail hawks, woodpeckers, bluebirds, deer, foxes, or a gaggle of wild turkeys.  There are scenic vantage points at South Mountain, Buttermilk Falls, Mountainview Nature Park, Kakiat, Clausland Mountain, and Haverstraw.

Steeped in history and the site of many pivotal moments in the foundation of the state and even the nation, Rockland County’s historic sites and landmarks serve as a living history lesson. Starting at the historic ’76 House in Tappan, the oldest pub in the United States and
the site of the Revolutionary War trial and imprisonment of British Major John Andre, to the Stony Point Battlefield, where General
“Mad” Anthony Wayne earned his nickname, Rockland’s historical trail traces its deep and storied roots. From the Dutch settlers who discovered Rockland in 1675, to Haverstraw’s establishment as the brickmaking capitol of the Hudson Valley in the 1800s, which helped build up the island of Manhattan, Rockland County is a rich tapestry of New York State’s history and very foundation.

Rockland County is known for many attractions, a wide range of world-class public, semi-private, and private golf courses, and is a destination spot for the discerning golfer. Rated one of the top 20 golf courses in New York State by Golf Magazine, Stony Point’s Patriot Hills Golf Club is a challenge for novice and seasoned golfer alike. Ramapo’s Spook Rock Golf Course attracts avid golfers and has been frequented by celebrities and sports figures alike. In the private course realm, the spectacular Manhattan Woods Golf Club in West
Nyack reigns supreme. This members only golf club, with its spectacular views of the New York City skyline, offers some of the finest course-hole design in the state.

So close to the bustling city, Rockland is everybody’s playground. There are no less than 32,000 acres of untouched parklands dotted with sparkling lakes and streams rushing down to the Hudson. Mile after mile of marked trails lead you right to the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains.

Rockland County is home to some unique special attractions, including one of the country’s largest indoor malls, the Palisades Center, and the newly redesigned, upscale shopping establishment right in the heart of the county, The Shops at Nanuet. Situated on the grounds of historic 19th century country estate, Torne Valley Vineyards in Hillburn offers wine tasting and live music on the weekends, as well as tremendous views of the Ramapo River. Sports fans come from all over the Hudson Valley and New Jersey to see the county’s minor league baseball team, The Rockland Boulders, at Palisades Credit Union Park in Pomona. The stadium offers outdoor concerts featuring major performing artists and facilities for special events including birthday parties, charitable events, and more. Rockland County offers big time entertainment, sports, and attractions for people of all ages and interest – just 30 miles outside of Manhattan.

Just like the items on your shopping list, there’s a lot of variety in the types of shopping experiences in Rockland County. For example, the Palisades Center is the eighth largest shopping malls in the U.S., with more than 250 stores, restaurants, and entertainment. The Shops at Nanuet offers high-end shopping and dining. You can also walk the main streets of towns like Piermont and Nyack to discover quaint boutiques, antique stores, and unique shops – with clothing, jewelry, crafts handmade in the Hudson Valley, gourmet foods, home décor, and much more.

The restaurant scene in Rockland County is diverse – just like its population – and reflects a wide range of tastes. And the Cropsey Farm in New City allows farmers of all ages to grow their own vegetables, fruits, and produce in a co-op farming program unique to Rockland County. Seasonal Farmers’ Markets provide an ample spread of locally grown products, baked goods, spices, fruits, fresh-cut flowers, and more.
